The Center for Hearing and Speech’s volunteer opportunities

The Center for Hearing and Speech, a United Way agency, offers classes and resources to teach deaf children to listen, speak, and read.

The organization has an annual event, Via Colori, that requires more than 600 volunteers. It will be on November 18 and 19 this year. You can learn more about this opportunity on the Via Colori Website. Volunteer recruitment for this event will begin in September 2017.

Most of the Center for Hearing and Speech’s other volunteer opportunities are during the week, from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Thursday and from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm on Friday. The Center for Hearing and Speech is closed on the weekends. Volunteer opportunities during the week (that require orientation) include translation, classroom volunteering, administrative and clerical support, development helpers, tutors. Volunteer opportunities during the week (that do not require orientation) include carpentry/building work, craft makers/painters/decorators, and or help on supply, book, and toy drives.

See, Test & Treat: Volunteer Opportunities – March 25, 2017

seetesttreat-2017The See, Test & Treat Program is seeking volunteers and would appreciate volunteer involvement and commitment to the program on March 25th , 2017. The community involvement will strengthen the awareness of women’s health in the Houston area.  The program is expecting over 150 patients, in which fifty percent of these women have been pre-registered for this program.

Volunteers will be assigned their prospective roles and also given facility tours on March 24th, 2017, dinner and t-shirt will be provided to all. During orientation, the volunteer will receive a map pinpointing patient and volunteer stations, which will allow the volunteer to be as helpful as possible. Translators will  be available upon request within the area volunteers are situated at. Volunteers will be provided with a T-shirt and asked to wear dark color pants, scrubs or jeans for the event.

The next day, March 25th, 2017, will be the See, Test & Treat event.  The See, Test & Treat Program looks forward to working with a great group of talented individuals.

Neighborhood Centers volunteer opportunity

Neighborhood Centers, a United Way Agency, has immigration forums one Saturday every month. Training is provided on the same day. Volunteers are needed to conduct legal screenings and assist qualified Legal Permanent Residents in completing their Naturalization (Citizenship) application. Volunteers also support with coordination of the event as runners, interpreters, and registration.

The River Performing and Visual Arts Center volunteer opportunities

The River Performing and Visual Arts Center, an educational program of Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) provides accessible, affordable fine arts education for individuals who have disabilities.

Urban Harvest volunteering opportunities

Urban Harvest is an organization that encourages the community with the education and activity of organic gardening. Below are volunteer opportunities available:

Community Gardens Group Volunteers

Groups are needed to help out in community gardens! If you have a group who is interested please see directions above. Visit the community garden volunteer page for more information.

Community Gardens Individual Volunteers

Community gardens individual volunteers: Community Gardens always need dedicated volunteers to help in gardens! Many of the gardens have their contact information posted on the community gardens map. If not it will direct you to contact the Community Gardens Coordinator who will put you in touch with the garden coordinator. It helps to volunteer in a garden close to you (you will be more likely to go back!) If you are particularly interested in working in a community garden that is more in need of volunteers please let us know.  We will also need to know how far you are willing to travel to a garden. No garden experience is required to volunteer in a community garden. Visit the community garden volunteer page for more information.

Youth Education

After School Garden Assistant: This volunteer opportunity entails assisting garden instructors that service approximately 20 youth partner sites; including elementary schools, middles schools, and community centers that offer after school gardening programs. This volunteer could be a regular assistant that helps with the gardening instructor’s hands-on gardening classes that include activities involving science, math, and other core subjects, as well as planting, growing, and harvesting of seasonal vegetables and fruit. It could be as a volunteer that specifically helps with cooking activities or garden maintenance. The afterschool times usually run from 3 – 5pm or 4 – 6pm (approx. 2.5 hrs each class)

School Garden Build Volunteer: This volunteer opportunity allows volunteers to help build school gardens that are used as outdoor classrooms for the Houston ISD and Spring Branch ISD schools that Urban Harvest has during the day and after school garden programming. We have a brief training and overview of the garden or habitat build objectives.  Let us know you’re interested and we will include you in the school garden email list and will email you when we have a community garden work day scheduled. Classes 

Classes Helper: This volunteer opportunity entails helping  to set up the classroom, check in students and hand out class materials as well as provide information about Urban Harvest. Volunteers get credit for classes for which they are a helper and may take classes for free as a benefit for your contribution of time. (approx. 2.5 hrs each class) email lilly@urbanharvest.org

Farmers Market

Eastside Farmers Market Roustabout: Volunteers are expected to help with setup and take down of tables, tents, and other market infrastructure. Help with special projects and various other duties will be assigned. Please bring water, sunscreen, and a big hat. Volunteers will gain an understanding of the farmers market operations, from setup to management. Volunteers will also spend time with board members at the greeter’s booth to learn more about the organization as a whole.

Houston Pets Alive volunteer opportunities

Houston Pets Alive is an animal rescue group with programs to help save animals most at risk for euthanasia. Please see below for the organization’s volunteer opportunities.

1) Volunteers to help handle dogs and talk to the public in order to promote adoptions during our weekend adoption events.
2) Volunteers to help care for cats that live in the condos at Petsmart (Petsmart by Westheimer and Dunvale).
3) Volunteers to assist with emails/ voicemails and processing volunteer applications.
4) Volunteers to go to the Harris County Shelter and act as a liaison to meet the animals and take their pictures. The descriptive information and pictures of the animals will be sent with foster pleas.
5) Volunteers to make flyers for adoptable dogs based on a template and also volunteers to hang those flyers.
6) Someone to run a PASS program – it is a Facebook based page that will help network animals that people need to give up so that we can help them to avoid dropping them at a shelter.

GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land volunteer opportunities

GiGi’s Playhouse Sugar Land is a non-profit organization that provides educational and therapeutic programs to individuals with Down Syndrome, their families, and the community.

Reining Strength volunteer opportunities

Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to children and adults with special needs.  The program is in need of sidewalkers and leaders to assist in therapeutic riding lessons.

SIDEWALKERS

Sidewalkers will be walking along side riders & support the rider in performing the requested activities of the PATH, Intl. Instructors. To be considered for sidewalking, the individual must be physically capable of walking alongside the horse for at least an hour.

LEADERS

Leaders will lead the horses during the therapeutic riding lesson. Leaders must demonstrate an ability to control the horse in various situations. Additional in-depth training is necessary to lead a horse during lessons. To be considered as a leader, the volunteer must be physically capable of leading and managing the horse for at least an hour.

Want to volunteer?: All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation. It will last approximately two hours and will be held at: 8811 FM 359 Rd., Richmond, TX 77406. Fort Bend Museum volunteer opportunities

The Fort Bend Museum preserves the history of Fort Bend County and surrounding areas located in Richmond, Texas. They are looking for volunteers to give historic house tours, to volunteer for the Texian Market Days event in October, and other special events.

Historic House Tour Volunteers

The museum does not have volunteer projects every weekend, only as they arise, but they are always accepting new volunteers. From Tuesday to Saturday, there are historic house tours of the Long-Smith Cottage and the Moore Mansion at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Potential volunteers might be interested in learning to give these historic tours. Weekend volunteers generally will be giving house tours, helping at the front desk, or helping with projects that arise around the museum. The museum is flexible with the volunteer’s schedule.

Texian Market Days in October

Texian Market Days is a community event at George Ranch Historical Park, held by the Fort Bend Museum Association. The event always welcome volunteers to help.Volunteers are needed in general at the event, with volunteer opportunities ranging from running the ticket booth to being a re-enactor.  This year the event is held on Saturday, October 26, 2019.

Other Special Events

For those who become regular volunteers at the museum, they may be recruited to be a part of volunteer teams for certain special events we hold, like Playing in the Past, A Southern Garden Party, Lone Star Stomp, etc.

Third Annual Black History Month Celebration

Missouri City will celebrate its Third Annual Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 11 through a day-long ceremony of music and culture that will pay tribute to the many Fort Bend County African-American leaders and advocates—past, present and future.

READ Program Volunteering

In 2014, At-Large Position 2 Councilmember Chris Preston initiated the City’s READ Program at Glover Elementary by reading to several classrooms and answering questions about City leadership. To expand on the success of the READ program, beginning in 2017, the READ program is expanding to multiple Fort Bend ISD campuses:

    • Lantern Lane Elementary
    • E.A. Jones Elementary
    • Quail Valley Elementary
    • Lynn Armstrong Elementary

For all FBISD programs, volunteers need to complete an additional Fort Bend Independent School District criminal background check.

Other upcoming and ongoing volunteer opportunities

  • Communications: The City Hall front desk is looking for a friendly face to assist with overall front desk operations. This includes greeting guests, answering phones, logging packages and providing general information. The ideal volunteer would also assist the front desk staff with organization and main lobby upkeep. Lastly, they’d need to be comfortable with occasionally working the front desk solo.
  • City Secretary: The Department, who is in charge of recording and organizing all official City records, is in need of a volunteer who can assist with an ongoing organizing project. The volunteer would be needed during regular City Hall hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., any day Monday– Friday, and would work alongside City Secretary staff.
  • Website Redesign: City Staff members are preparing to update www.missouricitytx.gov and would like volunteer input and feedback on the project. The City website will receive a revitalized appearance to improve usability and overall functionality. Staff members are in the process of compiling thoughts and ideas from citizens, commercial, municipal and information technology partners that will allow the website to better serve all constituents. The redesign will be more mobile friendly and will feature enhancements that will improve ease of access.
