Attack Poverty is a global organization that works with local churches and communities to adopt pockets of poverty and launch “Friends Initiatives” to help transform community. A variety of volunteer opportunities are needed for various on-going programs.
On-going Programs
You Can Academy | Monday through Friday – 2:45pm-5:15pm
Every day Monday through Friday, the You Can Academy after school program tutors and mentors first through fifth grade students. The students receive a snack, hear a bible lesson, work on their homework, and then have some free time to play! The relationships that are formed from volunteers showing up consistently week after week are absolutely amazing and encourage the students that they can graduate high school to do amazing things with their life! You Can Academy aims to increase opportunities for children to benefit from constructive educational activities.
ESL | Monday and Wednesday mornings – 10am-11:30am
An adult’s ability to speak and understand English is important if he/she is to participate fully in today’s society. The ESL classes are designed to help adults (18 years of age and older) to learn the four basic communication skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – in ways that relate to every day life.
GED | Day and time are flexible to the volunteer’s schedule
The classes are structured to help individuals pass GED exams necessary to receive their GED certificate. The subjects covered are writing, reading, math, science, and social studies
A Pre & Post Test is given for each subject to determine whether or not the student is ready for the actual exam. Students attend 6 classroom hours per week as well as work individually at home.
COMPUTERS| Saturday mornings – 8:30am-11am
Much of our lives revolve around technology! Most job applications, registrations for events, job opportunities, and even advancement in educational opportunities require some level of efficiency on the computer.
Basic computer skills class are designed to familiarize students with the basic computer functions, help facilitate understanding on how to navigate online, and develop beginner skills in work processing.
JOBS FOR LIFE | Thursday evenings – 5:30pm-7pm
Jobs for Life offers a unique solution to poverty and joblessness in communities and for individuals across the country. Today, churches and ministries in over 160 cities and 34 states are leading Jobs for Life training classes providing biblical job training, ongoing assistance and hope to those in their community who struggle finding and keeping employment. JFL’s program for adults provides powerful tool for churches and ministries to transform lives and communities as people learn God’s gift of work, find employment, and experience life in Christ.
The Future | Sunday 4pm-6pm
A Weekly mentoring program for teenagers that meets on Sunday afternoons.
Mercy Goods: Coming Soon! Mercy Goods is a social enterprise of Attack Poverty that hires local teens in the community, offering mentoring and teaching woodworking and craftsmanship skills. Opportunities for tutoring, mentoring, woodworking and carpentry. Contact zach@attackpoverty.org for details.
Home Repairs | Varied weekends throughout the year
A revitalization program designed to improve living conditions to a safe standard for resident in North Richmond.
Prayer Team – Prayer Board manager wanted: help maintain our community prayer wall, keep clean, keep chalk stocked, and communicate requests to prayer team.
Walk Door to Door to Pray for the Community and Share Information | Any Weekend
The best way to get to know a community is talking with people. Join for a Saturday of your choosing for walking door to door through the North Richmond community to ask for prayer requests and share upcoming events.

Run to Attack Poverty | Saturday March 9: Volunteer to support race day activities or preparations before the race.
Mission Week | June 10-13 (6-8pm)
The seventh annual Mission Week event will be during June 10 to June 13 from 6 to 8pm in the North Richmond Neighborhood
Come be on mission in your own backyard! This June, there will be a week long opportunity for you and your family, friends, and neighbors to serve alongside each other. There are many ways to participate or volunteer including basketball tournament, kids camp, hospitality, prayer team, home repair, and more! So choose your favorite when you register!
All students ages 11 and older may volunteer. If you have children ages 4-10 they can be a part of the Kids Camp! Join in being the Hands and Feet of Jesus Christ right here in Houston!
