The Houston Food Bank is a non profit food rescue organization that has a variety of flexible volunteer opportunities. Please see below for more details.
Individual and/or group opportunities:
Portwall Warehouse: (1-1,000 volunteers)
Thanks to volunteers, in fiscal year 2015-2016, the Houston Food Bank distributed 79,000,000 nutritious meals. Portwall Warehouse volunteers (ages 6 and older) inspect, sort and repackage donated food items. Portwall Warehouse is open 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, and has availability to fit every schedule. Keegan Kitchen: (1-25 volunteers)
On a typical day in southeast Texas, 5,000 children will go to bed hungry. The mission of the Kids Cafe Program is to help alleviate child hunger in America by providing hungry children with nutritious meals at times when other resources are not available, such as after school, on the weekends, and during the summer. Kids Cafe Programs provide free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of existing community locations where children congregate such as Boys and Girls Clubs, churches or public schools. Kids Cafe volunteers (ages 16 and older) prep, setup and service thousands of meals that are locally distributed. Teachers Aid Center: (1-15 volunteers)
Many children can’t afford the most basic school supplies. Without the proper tools to do the work, children are challenged to achieve academic success. The Teachers Aid program provides the supplies kids need to succeed. Volunteers (ages 13 and older) help check-in teachers, stock shelves, organize product and assist teachers shop. Senior Box Distribution: (1-10 volunteers)
Volunteers (ages 16 and older) help move boxes and load them into cars for seniors who pick up food boxes during monthly distributions at area community centers and other locations. Senior Box Distribution opportunities are listed in purple as “Senior Boxes” at houstonfoodbank.civicore.com
Theme Nights and Special Events:
The Houston Food Bank also provides a variety of theme nights and special events for all age groups and interests including an upcoming Boy Scout Night (February 8) and 80’s Prom Night featuring ThunderPants, the Baddest 80’s Band in the World (February 18).
Individual Opportunities:
Apple Corps Leader:
The Apple Corps Team is a dedicated group of individuals who donate time regularly at the Houston Food Bank. This program is designed to expand upon existing skills or develop new leadership skills. With countless community and corporate volunteer groups each year, our Apple Corps volunteers are essential to the operation of the Food Bank by leading, training, and organizing these groups. Student Hero:

Hunger Fighter Rewards:
The Houston Food Bank is also kicking off our 2nd Annual Hunger Fighter Rewards program! This initiative is a structured prize distribution system were we reward individuals who help us fight hunger by volunteering for either three shifts, six shifts, or nine shifts from January 16th through March 31st. Prizes include Houston Dynamo tickets, Kemah Boardwalk All Day Ride Passes, Houston Zoo tickets, Dave & Buster’s $10 Super Charged Power Cards, Houston Ultimate Women’s Expo tickets and more!
